How do we celebrate Holy Week and Easter?

Sunday, March 29, 10:00 am – Palm Sunday: The Palm Procession and Holy Communion

We remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem and read together the Passion Gospel.

Thursday, April 2, 7:00 pm – Maundy Thursday:

We remember Jesus’ washing his disciples feet and share a meal together.  After our meal, we enter the sanctuary in silence and remove all that signifies Jesus’ presence in the church.  When Jesus was crucified, the disciples were bereft and frightened.  Our “stripping of the altar” symbolizes the three days of Jesus’ absence before The Resurrection.

Friday, April 3, 7:00 am – Good Friday Stations of the Cross:

We remember Jesus’ journey from His condemnation by Pilate to His death and burial.

Friday, April 3, 7:00 pm – Good Friday Tenebrae:

Tenebrae is the Latin word for Shadow.  The service begins in the church lit by candles.  After each reading, a candle is extinguished. We end with only the Christ Candle lit as we read from Psalm 22 which Jesus quoted on the cross.  The final candle is extinguished and we depart from the church in silence.  This service recreates the betrayal, abandonment and agony of the events of the crucifixion.  The story is left unfinished because it will not end until Easter Day.

Sunday, April 5, 10:00 am – Easter Day:

We have spent a solemn week remembering so that our joy on Easter Day abounds.  The children process into the church with banners and flowers, we decorate the Easter cross, and we celebrate the joyous first Holy Communion of the Easter season.  After the service, we have a festive Easter egg hunt for the children.

All are welcome at the Lord’s Table!
